The MODEST Wiki

Contents

The MODEST Wiki, also known as the MicaSim Wiki, is a project and workshop related to translation italian gravitational simulations of astrophysical systems. For more information, see About MODEST.

Anybody and everybody is welcome to read this wiki. If you wish to contribute to it, Log in or create an account.

Starting Points

For Researchers

  • ACS : The Art of Computational Science, a living textbook that starts with Moving Stars Around and goes into more advanced methods and techniques used in N-body research.
  • #MODEST Projects : including educational projects, visualization projects, and research projects.

For Students

  • Moving Stars Around : a gentle introduction to gravitational simulations, giving you everything you need to basically understand the problem. Good for anybody from the bright and interested high school student through the graduate student or professional who wants a meaty introduction to the basics of the field.
  • ACS : The Art of Computational Science, a living textbook that starts with Moving Stars Around and goes into more advanced methods and techniques used in N-body research.
  • Second Life Workshops : The regular meeting of the MODEST workshop in Second Life, where you can come and learn about the latest developments, talk to professionals working in the field, and help us explore the use of virtual worlds for the visualization of N-body simulations.

For the Interested Public

  • LSL 3-Body : The Second Life 3-body simulator. An object rezzed out in Second Life where you can watch the 3-body problem being solved in real time, and get a copy of the simulator to play with yourself. This page includes a fair amount of details about the creation and implementation of the code.
  • Moving Stars Around : A gentle introduction to the N-body problem, and to writing computer code to solve the N-body problem.

Projects that are part of MODEST and that have their primary home here

  • NewtonPhysics, aka micasim : a Physics module for OpenSimulator that replaces the typical "game physics" engine of a virtual world with a real N-body code, allowing you to "just use" the infrastructure of a virtual world to visualize the results of the calculations as they are being performed.
  • ACS: Translation of Makino and Hut's "The Art of Computational Science" to this wiki. Thus far, the introduction to N-body codes, Moving Stars Around, has been converted.
  • LSL 3-Body : A demonstration of a numerical 3-body solution written entirely in LSL, the scripting language of Second Life, that runs within Second Life.
  • StarryOrbits: Dave Wilson's N-body results viewer that displays 3D animations to the general public. Launched November 2009.

Projects related to MODEST that have a primary home elsewhere

  • AstroSim: Arturo Nakasone's tool that uses bots to import data moving around objects
  • GravSim: Mark Ridler's home-computer gravity simulation package
  • NEMO: NEMO Stellary Dynamics Toolbox (Peter Teuben maintains this)
